APPRENTICE’S SUCCESS AT SKILLBUILD
1 October, 2014
SkillBuild has been running for over 45 years, the longest running construction skills competition in Britain and winners of the regional competition will participate in the National Finals in Birmingham in November. Success at the SkillBuild final will give entrants an opportunity to compete at the 2015 WorldSkills competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil as a member of the WorldSkills UK team.
Specialist Apprenticeship trainees, Sean Keenor of RoofSmart & Jack Rider-Dobson of O’Brien Roofing & Leadwork Ltd, both of whom have been trained by Alan Lander of RoofTrain, took part in this year’s Skillbuild Roof, Slating and Tiling competition in the South West regional heat in June.
Demonstrating their roofing skills within a six hour timespan, the national judge, Simon Dixon of Sandtoft Roofing Tiles had a difficult task in choosing a winner as the standard of all the participants was high. As well as being judged with an emphasis on accuracy and neatness, as well as working to a stringent marking plan, competitors were also tested on their ability to follow instructions, understand drawings and work to a strict timescale.
Congratulations are in order to Sean who reached the National Finals, due to be held in November, we wish him the best of luck!
Alan Lander, trainer, said:”I am thrilled with this result, our third finalist to date, competitions like Skillbuild do not just benefit the industry by showcasing the many skills within the industry but are also good for moral, giving students a sense of worth.”
“I wish both Sean and Jack, who have been a delight to teach, continued success in their future and who, I am sure, will continue to have the support of their respective employers.”
